How do I choose a study block?

Blocks are the building pieces of a study. Each one captures a different kind of input from the people taking it. The trick to picking the right one is to start from what you want to learn, then choose the block that answers in that shape.

Start from the question

• “Which of these do people prefer?” A preference test.
• “Which version of this wording lands better?” A copy test.
• “Where would people click to do this?” A first-click test on a prototype, or an image click test on a static screen.
• “How do people feel about this?” A rating scale, with an open text follow-up for the why.
• “Why do people do this, and what lies behind their first answer?” An AI interview that follows up on each answer.
• “How do people group these items?” A card sort.
• “What sticks after a quick look?” A five-second test.
• “Does this navigation make sense?” A tree test.
• “Can people complete this task on the live site?” A Live website block.

If you are not sure of the shape yet, an open text block is a fine first move. You can add more structured blocks once you know what to ask.

Study setup
